The Basics of Abstract Painting
Abstract painting is considered one of the purest forms of expression, as it allows its creator to freely communicate visually without the constraint of forms found in objective reality. The approaches found within abstract painting encompass many movements including German Expressionism, Fauvism, Cubism, and Abstract Expressionism.
The definition of abstract is ‘existing in thought or as an idea but not having a physical or concrete existence’. Some people say that water is abstract as it has no form, this is regarded as a conceptual view and really bears no relevance to the artistic form of abstract. Some will argue that other forms of nature are abstract. We can all agree that the more philosophical of views are that which consider ‘love or beauty’ as abstract expression.
I like the definition that states ‘relating to or denoting art that does not attempt to represent external reality, but rather seeks to achieve its effect using shapes, colours, and textures’. However I would add the phrase ‘from the viewers point of view’ at the end. Many people stand in front of my paintings and each person can see something different. I have stood with 6 people in front of an abstract of mine and all 6 have said they see different things. It is quite a spectical when they look at each other in awe at what each person perceived within an abstract. It is quite and exciting feeling.
